The Unraveling of An
Unacknowledged
Shadow
What happens when the shadow is left unexamined? This essay explores how the parts of ourselves we refuse to confront can begin seeping into our lives in ways we may not recognize. It examines the reasons people reject their shadow, how repression and shame operate on both a personal and collective level, the construction of the “good self” and the question of what defines goodness. I discuss The Unraveling—how far the shadow is willing to go—and, lastly, the stages of victimhood and how someone can gradually become a byproduct of the very thing that once harmed them.
